Selection Criteria Book Reviews
There are many websites and books out there focused on providing practical advice, tips and information in relation to selection criteria. They all vary widely in the level of support that they provide job-seekers, some are more practical and useful than others, however most will offer you the very least in seeking to explain the use of selection criteria in recruitment and selection processes, basic principles in planning and research of positions, key ideas on developing evidence-based responses to selection criteria, strategies for framing your responses based on selection criteria models, advice on identifying your key contributions, and offer practical and proven strategies to boost your application and set you apart from other job-seekers.
Below, I have reviewed just a few that I have found useful over the course of my career to date, offering career management strategies to clients and professional writing services in the form of cover/application letters, resumes/curriculum vitae, selection criteria responses, competency statements and expressions of interest.
I hope that you too will find them useful.
If you know of any other books/resources that you think should be included on this list relating to selection criteria, please feel free to email me. I would be happy to review your recommendations and add them to the list.
How to Write and Talk to Selection Criteria
Improving your Chances of Winning a Job
By Dr Ann Villiers
Now in its fourth edition, this book is targeted at job-seekers within the public service and private sectors and those applying for federal, state, territory and local government jobs. It not only offers insight into public sector selection processes but also provides practical explanations related to the government interview.
This includes providing 14 techniques for preparing a quality selection criteria statement including responding to key words, addressing all parts of the criterion, writing an evidence-based response, being focused on outcomes, using correct English and provides practical tips to ensure a visually appealing application.
This is a great resource for anyone thinking about applying for work in the public service sector or indeed those already within the public sector seeking a promotion.
Addressing Selection Criteria: Complete Reference
By Irene Goudie
This is a great resource for anyone who is faced with the time-consuming and pain-staking task of addressing selection criteria (whether for the first time or those seeking a promotion with the public sector). It gives practical tips and advice to first-time job-seekers, those seeking entry-level roles, mature aged workers, graduates, those returning to the workforce, first time selection panel members and private sector employees.
Overall, it provides really good insight into the Australian Public Service Sector, an overview of the written application/selection criteria statement, the interview process, professional development, the selection committee and its role and gives an overview of state and territory services.
Its only downfall is the currency of contact information. With the advent of the internet, more energy could be devoted to online information and relevant websites containing up-to-date job-seeker information.

The Secrets to Winning Positions with Selection Criteria
By Dawn Richards
A book that claims that responding to selection criteria is easy! But only when you know how. This book is targeted at entry level job-seekers, those seeking promotion and those transitioning from the defence force.
It uses a strong marketing approach and identifies proven strategies aimed at teaching job-seekers how to “sell” their skills to prospective employers, both as part of the selection criteria statement/application process and interview.
Where it differs from other books available on selection criteria is that it offers loads of practical, real-life examples (albeit on the junior end). The advice given as part of the book ensures that job-seekers are able to use this framework for any level of role to ensure that applications/responses to selection criteria are written according to what employers are hoping to hear.
Another bonus is the CD that comes with the book offering great resources, checklists, templates and samples ensuring sufficient material for job-seekers to adapt to their own applications.
